Kirk Mechar’s work is shaped by the volcanic landscape of Nevis. His sculptures are carved from volcanic stone gathered on the island, material shaped by geological time and made active again through carving. Dust from this process is turned into clay and applied to the surface, creating a quiet cycle of excavation, renewal, and return.
His paintings extend this approach into layered fields of colour and texture that echo the island’s terrain and rainforest. Across both mediums, Mechar’s practice considers transformation as a form of continuity, revealing the island itself as both medium and subject.
